Some movies have built-in sequels. Horror movies-- the supposedly dead killer wasn't really dead or is somehow resurrected. Nothing really new. He was probably dead before the first movie started anyway so he can come back & slash a few more bodies. Comic book movies-- all these super heroes have a rogue's gallery of villains awaiting to be brought to the big screen. Cop movies-- there's always crime sprees, murder investigations, etc. Comedies, however, are a different breed. They are made to be a one-off. But when the movie grosses over $100 million, the executives want a sequel. There-in lies the challenge. How do you make a sequel without totally redoing everything that happened in the first movie?
Hangover 2 has a few repeats from the first movie-- the phone calls at the beginning going to voicemail, the call from Phil saying they messed up, the missing friend, etc. Hell, I think after this happened twice I'd stop attending weddings/bachelor parties. I guess those callbacks are now a given if they decide to do anymore. So I guess if you are expecting a movie with 100% originality, you better look elsewhere.
This movie takes place a few days before Stu's wedding in Thailand. The Wolfpack take the Bride-to-be's little 16 year old brother out for a drink on the beach. Of course, that's the last thing they remember & wake up in Bangkok to find he is gone, except for his finger. The clues lead them all over Bangkok to a tattoo parlor, a strip club, a monastery, among other places. Although it is hard to strike comedy gold twice, they had to give it a shot. They do not fail. The movie has moments of hilarity scattered throughout. However, I feel they have called attention to the first one a little too much & didnt give this one enough strength to stand on its own. They could have done a few things differently instead of relying heavily on actions from the first film. Not to say these moments werent funny once again, but they were funnier the first time you saw them.
In closing, have you ever walked out of the theater wondering what was so bad they had to give it an R rating? That wont happen this time. In fact, you may wonder why it wasn't given an NC17.
