The "American Pie" film series has had its ups & downs. The first 2 skyrocketed to success & brought big bank. The third, some would argue brought about its downfall. I would agree-- to a point. I liked "American Wedding" overall but not as much as the first 2. The film had flaws. One was which was the missing character Oz. He was gone without explanation. He was supposed to be one of Jim's best friends & he's not around for the engagement or wedding? All it would take is one line "Too bad Oz couldn't make it. Him & Heather are visiting her parents." or "they're in Europe for the summer" or "they got killed when Sherminator just freaking snapped!" C'mon writers, think! We needed just a little bit of an explanation. Another flaw of the movie was Stifler. His performance just seemed forced. Its as if Seann William Scott forgot how to play Steve Stifler. And whie mildly amusing, the dance off was completely unnecessary.
Most people probably dont know the movie franchise carried on after that with "direct to DVD" releases. First up was the lackluster "American Pie Presents Band Camp" following another member of the Stifler family, Matt with cameos by Jim's Dad (the only remaining staple to be in every AP movie) & Sherman . It was OK, but I thought for sure this failure would sink any future AP movies. It didnt. A year later we had "AP Presents The Naked Mile". This one was much better than "Band Camp" & followed the exploits of a "Stifler of a different color", if you will, Erik. He's nothing like the previous members we met. We also another Dwight Stifler appear. Both of these characters go on to star in 2007's "AP Presents Beta House". "Beta House" is the funniest of the one after the original three & could rival "American Wedding".
Now it is 2 years later and the franchise strikes again with the upcoming release "AP Presents: The Book of Love". This one brings things back to the beginning in all meanings of the word. New cast, new characters, same plot. The Stifler family member in this outing is Scott. He's not a main character but he pops up continuously throughout the movie. As I said, the plot is pretty much the same as the first AP movie-- 3 friends strike out with girls & set out to try new tricks to lose their virginity. They even stumble upon "The Bible".
So, it is by NO means original but not as bad as I thought it would be. It still beats out "Band Camp". You can expect what you've gotten from the other movies-- crude, sexual humor, nudity (no, LOTS of nudity. it may just be the unrated version tho. not sure) & teenage hijinx. Scott Stifler is the typical jerk that gets his in the end (literally. ouch!)
Pretty good movie. Not the best. Could have been ALOT worse. Looking for the bonus stuff on the DVD when its released December 22. There was news early on that Tara Reid was supposed to reprise her role as Vicky. I hope the commentary explains what happened with that.
