The new "Friday the 13th" is re-launching the franchise. History has taught them well. The iconic images that are most associated with this series arent introduced until the 2nd (Jason himself as the killer) & 3rd movie (the mask). The mask didn't make its presence on the mangled, disfigured head of the killer until most of the way thru the 3rd part in the 80s. But this time aorund, knowing these are the icons that made the series & are the trademarks everybody associates with the name "Friday the 13th", the movie opens with the last camp counselor cutting the head off Mrs. Voorhees. Jason is killing his first victim about 10 minutes or so into the movie & he has his trademark mask about 40 minutes in. This series goes back to early days of thee series & improves on the Jason character. He goes back to being human in this series. He is smarter than before & faster. Here, we are presented with a running, thinking, killing machine that will stop at nothing to get who he is after.
There is not any new information about the history & making of what made Jason the way he is. We do see him come out of the woods after his mother is beheaded, but that mentioned in the old series. Anyone expecting to see something similar to "Rob Zombie's Halloween" will be disappointed. This is not "Rob Zombie's Friday the 13th". There's no revealing backstory with new information, just everything you loved about the original series. If they want a backstory, why doesn't someone explain how an 8 year old boy can drowned but not be dead, come back, see Mom beheaded, live in the woods alone, grow up to be 6'5", 250 lbs, strong as an ox & your worst nightmare. The killings are different, some are unique. But the old rules apply-- people who have sex, drink & smoke weed are doomed to die. The very first victim is looking for weed to sell.
So, in conclusion, I enjoyed it as a fan of the "Friday the 13th" franchise. I also went into it open minded. I didn't expect a great masterpiece, a completely different movie. Expect a lot of killings, some symbols & pieces you'll recognize from the old ones you love, a little bit of humor thrown in & you'll enjoy it just fine.
