Slash has always had some interesting choices when it comes to picking singers for his CDs. His first solo CD with Slash's Snakepit he picked Eric Dover, the guitarist for Jellyfish. He hadnt ever sung before. But rough, unpolished vocal stylings that Eric brought to the table fit the songs very well in a raw way. Picking Scott Weiland for Velvet Revolver was another odd choice. Scott has always been famous for his drug problems. I loved what he brought to the band musically & vocally. But he also brought a world of trouble & delays with a 3rd CD when he left the band & reunited with Stone Temple Pilots.
On his new CD Slash decided to go the route of "guest vocals"-- a different singer for each song. Some of choices are quite obvious from the metal world-- Ozzy, Lemmy, Ian Astbury (from The Cult) & Iggy Pop (OK, he wasn't metal). Even Chris Cornell & more recent screamers such as Kid Rock & M Shadows (from Avenged Sevenfold) would seem to fit in perfectly. Not to mention Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother.
The rest of the guests are a bit puzzling-- Myles Kennedy, Rocco DeLuca, Adam Levine & Fergie. What? Fergie? Black Eyed Peas Fergie? What the hell was he thinking? Never heard of these other people. Adam Levine is in Maroon 5? What is ANOTHER pop singer doing here? Has Slash lost his mind?
I'll tell you one thing tho-- Slash knows his music & knows what he's doing. Some songs are better than others, as with every CD, but each singer brings their distinct sounds to the songs. So far I think there's a lot of great stuff. Myles Kennedy brings powerful vocals to "Starlight" & "Back from Cali". Ozzy is in top form on "Crucify the Dead". "Ghost" is the first time I've heard Ian Astbury sing in about 15 years. He hasnt missed a beat. One of the best is M Shadows offering- "Nothing to Say". It surprises me very much to actually say that Fergie's song "Beautiful Dangerous" is another early favorite. Some of the others are growing on me even tho I wasnt familiar with the singers beforehand.
One disappointment is from guests I havent mentioned yet-- Duff McKagan & Dave Grohl. They play bass & drums on "Watch This". Its a great piece of music but 3 talented musicians/songwriters in a room cant write any lyrics to fit this song? Its an instrumental. Duff & Dave can both sing so we werent lacking a talented singer. C'mon guys! A great CD could have been even better. Slash has another masterpiece on his hands.
