Sitting in the theater as "Alice in Wonderland" started, I was overcome with a feeling a dread. The movie didn't start out in Wonderland- Duh! But instead it starts in some old-timey place- 1800's or so. This type of movie is often a long, boring process to get the story going -- to get to the fantastical Wonderland. But my fears were subsided in about 10 minutes time when Alice fell down the rabbit hole.
It never ceases to amaze me how many times a story like this can be retold without the story getting stale. Tim Burton brings his own personal touch to this version. The elaborate landscapes & out of this world character appearances are enough to appease even the mildest fan. The action, adventure, special effect will wow you throughout the film. The movie moves at good pace to keep from lagging. The animation is stunningly brilliant.
Johnny Depp doesn't just step into the character of the Mad Hatter, he consumes & becomes him. The only trouble I had with him was in the first scene he appeared in. I dont know if it was the way he spoke or all of Wonderlands made up words, but I had a difficult time understanding a lot of what he said. They were speaking so quickly, it all coming out jibberish. I definitely need to watch it again. If I still have trouble when the DVD come out, I can put on the subtitles. Helena Bonham Carter is fantastic as the sadistic Red Queen. Anne Hathaway shines as the White Queen, altho her role isnt as big. Alan Rickman's voice is very recognizable as the blue caterpillar.
As always, Tim Burton has surrounded himself with a talented cast that he has worked with before. He knows what he wants & knows out to get it out of these people. Why mess with the recipe? In my humble opinion, he has indeed done a fantastic job. I cant wait to actually check out the 3D version (yes, all this praise was from the standard 2D. I wasn't overwhelmed with the trickery of 3D.) So if you are to brave and bold to disagree with me, then OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!
