A talented alternative rock band from the town of Franklin, TN, Paramore set out to make a follow up to the "Riot!" CD, which put them on the map with hits such as "Misery Business", "CrushCrushCrush" & "Thats What You Get". That usually proves to be a large task for a lot of bands that they cant live up to. In my opinion, Paramore has stood up to the challenge & delivered one hell of a record with "Brand New Eyes". Those of you who caught them on the summer tour with No Doubt heard "Ignorance" & "Where the Lines Overlap". They also starting playing "Brick by Boring Brick" recently.
"Careful" is great opening track that sets you in the rock mood. Very deserving of the lead-off position, it sums up the feel of the CD right from the start. "Ignorance" is an excellent choice for first single."Playing God" has a little more slow, melodic beginning but then builds into a rock tune. The song features the best line of the whole CD "next time you point your finger, I might have to bend it back & break it- break it off". "Brick by Boring Brick" is another great song which is becoming a favorite very quickly. The rhythm is just overwhelming. "Turn it Off" brings a little more melody than rock but isnt exactly a ballad either. The song is brilliantly put together. Hayley's voice is full of emotion. "The Only Exception" is the bands first slow song on this CD. The simple acoustics are very fitting. Its very stripped down. Those that follow the band know they play songs acoustically when visiting radio stations. "Feeling Sorry" kicks the whole CD back into rock gear with a thundering drum & guitar opening in which Hayley explains "I got no time for feeling sorry". "Looking Up" has a very familiar sound to it. Its reminiscent of another of their songs in certain parts. Maybe its the pitch of the voice that's the same, or just certain chords. I cant quite put my finger on it tho. Another good track nonetheless. "Where the Lines Overlap" sounds a little different in the studio than it did live. But this is a song that is made to be played live. I can see Hayley getting some audience participation with the line "I've got a feeling if I sing this loud enough, you would sing it to back to me". I would love to see this played live when everyone knows the words & can sing back. "Misguided Ghosts" is another stripped song, even more so than "The Only Exception". Its sounds like it was recorded live in the studio with just an acoustic guitar & vocals. Very good song. Lastly we have "All I Wanted", melody takes over the picking guitar intro as it kicks into full rock, almost power-ballad-rock on the chorus.
This is the first Paramore CD that I can say I'm a fan of the band before the CD comes out & I have to say that I'm very impressed with what I hear. When the CD comes out September 29th, pick it up. I ordered my Deluxe Edition a few months ago so I'll be getting that in the mail soon, I hope, to check out all the goodies that come with it.
