November 2010. Four long years have passed since My Chemical Romance unleashed "The Black Parade". Now fans can wrap their ears around the bands latest effort-- "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys". Just as "The Black Parade" introduced us to new sounds & styles coming from Gerard & the guys, "Danger Days" does the same. The band is constant state of reinvention. Much like Guns N Roses CDs all have different sounds, "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge", "The Black Parade" & "Danger Days" all sound different from each other. No one can accuse of them of releasing the same CD over & over again. What do you expect? They arent in the place they were in 6 years ago when recording "Three Cheers". They cant be expected to write the same songs. Six years changes alot. With that out of the way, anyone expecting the same songs & same exact style will be greatly disappointed.
"Danger Days" songs represent the next era of MCR. Intertwined thru this 15-track CD are 3 radio broadcasts from the post-apocalyptic future DJ Dr Death Defying. After the first broadcast is heart-thumping "Na na na" which is a little happy than the MCR of the past but probably the closest you'll find to the classic sound, along with "Party Poison".
Songs like "Summertime", "S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W" are slower than a lot of fans may be willing to accept. "Summertime" is kind of like the anti-"I Dont Love You", extra saccharine included. "SING" & "The Only Hope For Me is You" are catchy & ready to sing-along, if you can get past the synth & little hints of techno. The techno sound is in full swing on "Planetary (GO!)", the song I'm having the most trouble getting into at the moment. Gerard even exclaims "I cant stop dancing!" (Dancing? MCR?" WTF?) "Bulletproof Heart" combines the slower rhythm with some heaviness. "Destroya" is a little journey into a punk realm, which almost seems out of place on this particular CD.
The CD closes with "Vampire Money", another pretty straight forward rock song. But after previous album closers ("I Never Told You What I Do for Living" & "Famous Last Words"), it doesn't seem very final. The final song on a record like this needs to be epic. It needs to be something special.
