"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" is probably the most faithful to the book since the first film since it has 2 movies to flesh out the massive story. But something tells me they werent paying a lot of attention to things they left out of this movie & the last movie.
Two glaring examples:
1. Bill Weasley's scar & new werewolf persona from Greyback. It was part of the big battle at Hogwats COMPLETELY left out of the 6th movie. So, technically in this universe he never fought Greyback. So he shouldn't have the scars or werewolf.
2. Bill & Fleur's wedding. In book 6, a lot of the stuff at the Weasleys revolved around them dating. That was cut from the movie. So when exactly did they start dating that they are getting married now?
Maybe continuity issues, maybe stuff that will be explained in the second part. Anyway, on to the good stuff about the movie.
The story telling was fantastic. Too often in past movies, critical portions of the book were cut to streamline the movie only giving the viewer half the story & pissing off the ones that read the books. Not here. I can plainly see why parts from the book were trimmed. No unnecessary cuts were made. No need to dwell on the Dursleys leaving. No need to have 47 camping scenes with the gang with little or nothing happening. Combine a few things. Cut the fat. Remove all the excess exhibition.
This movie stands apart from the rest of the series. There's only one other scene with a few other Hogwarts students since we dont even see the school in this movie. In some ways, its a cross between a road movie & an adventure movie. Rather than going back for their final year at Hogwarts, our Gryffindor heroes are off to find & destroy horcruxes to defeat Voldemorte.
A brief animation scene during a story telling sequence was a nice touch & done well. The climatic battle is a fitting ending for this first part. It doesn't leave that much of the story left to have in the second part. From what I'm guessing, the second part in July will be wall-to-wall action & I, for one, cant wait!!
